Chapter 10

“It’s raining,” Janet said as she pulled back the bedroom curtains the next morning. She peeked out at the pouring rain and then shut the curtains again. Crawling back into bed, she put her head on Edward’s chest and shut her eyes. “We could just stay in bed all day,” she suggested.

Edward’s chest shook as he laughed gently. “Darling, dearest, I wish we could. Even if we didn’t have to go to the abbey this morning, I don’t dare upset your sister by not turning up for breakfast.”

“You can’t possibly be afraid of my sister.”

“It isn’t fear as much as a healthy respect for a woman who devotes so much of her time and energy to others. She made the choice to buy the bed and breakfast after she’d retired simply because she’d always wanted to cook for and look after guests. She gets out of bed every morning and makes breakfast for herself and her husband, for their paying guests, and for us. The least we can do is turn up as scheduled and enjoy her hard work.”

Janet sighed. “When you put it that way, lying in sounds incredibly selfish.”

“We can lie in when we aren’t in Doveby Dale. Actually, we can lie in once we’ve moved out to the carriage house, assuming you aren’t planning to come into Doveby House for breakfast every morning once we’re out there.”

“I hadn’t really thought about it. We could make our own breakfast each morning in the carriage house, couldn’t we?”

“We could. Or we could continue having Joan make breakfast for us.”

“November is still a long way away. Let’s worry about that another day. For now, I suppose I’d better get up, though.”

“I can shower first, if you’d rather stay in bed for a short while.”

Janet shook her head. “I only want to stay in bed if I can stay in bed with you. If you’re getting up, then I may as well get up, too.”

Half an hour later, right on schedule, they walked into the kitchen. Joan grinned. “I thought you might like an American breakfast today,” she said. “I made pancakes and bacon for a change.”

“I don’t deserve you,” Janet told her, pulling her into a hug.

Joan was frowning when Janet released her. “What was that about?”

Janet laughed. “Nothing at all. I just hope you know how much we appreciate you.”

“I hope you’ll still appreciate me when I tell you that Michael and I have plans for dinner tonight,” Joan said. “We’re having dinner with one of his friends from university who happens to be passing this way.”

As she spoke, she put plates stacked with pancakes in front of both Edward and Janet. A large plate of bacon was put between them. The bottle of maple syrup was on Janet’s other side.

“Of course we don’t mind,” Edward said. “We’ll go to the diner, or maybe I’ll take Janet out for something a bit fancier. I hope you have a lovely time.”

“Thank you. I was going to let Michael go on his own, but his friend is travelling with his wife.
